Provisional £9.75m Future High Street Fund offer made

South Somerset District Council has been working on a bid to the Future High Streets Fund since early 2020, which will help support the redevelopment of a town centre within the district.

Our bid focussed on supporting the redevelopment of Yeovil town centre; an area of the district that has been on the Council’s Priority Projects list for a couple of years now.

Initially, we were one of the first 50 towns to be allowed access to the fund. This meant that we were shortlisted to receive some of the fund, but we had to bid for an amount. We worked with Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government and submitted the final case in May 2020. Further discussions in the autumn have now led to this provisional offer of £9.75m (69% of what we requested).

The case covers a number of the key projects in the Refresh programme. The funding would support the changes we plan to the main streets, provide funds to purchase and provide co-working space and support the major development sites.

When we finalise and receive the funding, we will be able to confirm what is being funded and our timetable for the work. We would expect to resolve this in the next few months as all information has to be submitted by the end of February 2021.
